Nunavut Employees Union members working with the hamlet in Kimmirut:
Your bargaining team met with the Hamlet to reach a fair deal for hamlet workers on Feb 11-12. The previous collective agreement expired on March 31, 2024, and this was our second time meeting the Employer to reach a new deal. A mediator joined us on these Feb dates to support the process as well.
We are disappointed to share no deal was reached. In addition to rejecting improvements to leaves and the Nunavut Northern Allowance lump sum, the employer is offering wage increases lower than any other hamlet in the territory. The increases being offered are also lower than those we have negotiated with housing associations, the Government of Nunavut and the Qulliq Energy Corporation.
Our team refused to accept this as we believe you deserve better!
What comes next?
Given how far apart the union and the employer are, we have reached impasse. This means a conciliation officer has been assigned to help the parties try to reach a deal.
If no deal is reached then a strike or lock out could take place. No strike can happen without a vote from the workers saying you support it.
This is a last resort and we hope that we can come to an fair agreement without one.
The union will be here to support the workers throughout this process.
We will keep let you know as soon as there is an update.
