The NEU supports all efforts and initiatives to protect and highlight the importance of Indigenous languages such as February’s Indigenous Languages Month in the NWT. Initiatives like this are important as Indigenous languages, cultures and traditions remain under the constant threat of extinction due to past and present colonialist actions and attitudes. In Nunavut, the NEU works to secure collective agreements that recognize and compensate for the use of Inuktut in the workplace. This was one of the issues fought for during the more than four-month long Iqaluit Housing Authority strike. While the current collective agreement with Government of Nunavut (GN) does provide for compensation for the use of Inuktut in the workplace, the GN seems more concerned with saving money, limiting bilingual positions, and forcing Inuit employees to prove that they speak their mother tongue. Other incentive programs to promote the use of Inuktut in GN workplaces are also failing as Inuit employees wait years for redundant testing.  This is Nunavut. One has to wonder when the GN is going to get serious about doing everything possible to ensure the preservation and promotion of Inuktut in their workplaces and throughout the Territory.
