NEU Offices Closed Wednesday July 1 for Canada Day

NEU Offices will be closed on Wednesday July 1st to mark Canada Day. Offices will open for regular business hours on Thursday July 2nd. We wish everyone a happy and safe Canada Day and would also like to note that July 1 is also Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador. This somber remembrance has been observed annually since July 1, 1917 to recall and honor the loss of approximately 700 soldiers of the 1st Newfoundland Regiment from the Dominion of Newfoundland at Beaumont-Hamel on the first day on the Somme during the First World War.

On behalf of the NEU President, Executive and staff we would like to wish all Canadians a Happy and Safe Canada Day. Canada turns 153 years old on Wednesday, July 1, 2020. By many standards, Canada is a young country with a lot to be proud of. We have come a long way since 1867, having taken many progressive steps along the journey that is our history. Recent events have also shown us that we have had missteps along the way, included, but not limited to our treatment of Indigenous Peoples and other minority groups. Canada is seen by many other countries around the world as progressive and open, but, a true Canadian strength has always been our ability to remain humble about ourselves and to recognize our potential shortcomings. Let us all work together in respect, inclusion and honesty to deal with the institutional and systemic issues that single out any individual negatively because of differences (visible or otherwise). That needs to be the future history and legacy of Canada and how we will mature together to properly earn our open and inclusive reputation.

    NEU Iqaluit Head Office Update

The NEU Head Office in Iqaluit is now reopened after being closed since mid-March due to COVID-19 public health concerns and precautions. As part of our office reopening and in-line with mandatory precautions designed to protect the staff, our Members and the general public there are restrictions on the amount of individuals allowed in the building at any given time. With this in mind, the NEU is asking Members to call 979.4209 or email their Service Officer or other NEU representative instead of just ‘dropping by’. The NEU thanks our Members for their understanding and patience with this situation and appreciates their efforts in keeping Nunavut safe and healthy.

A Message From the NEU President regarding recent US incidents
On May 25, 2020 George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man was killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota by a white police officer. Since that date, the United States has seen unparalleled protests and rioting borne of frustration with institutional racism suffered by black Americans and the shock of seeing a human being killed at the hands of those sworn to protect and serve.
Here, North of the US-Canadian border it is easy to dismiss that as an American issue and problem. It is also easy to concentrate on the looting and violence perpetrated by those using the legitimate and warranted protests as cover for their lawless and unrelated actions...
