NEU statement on Nunavut MP crossing the floor

Wednesday, March 11, 2026

As the labour union representing over 5,000 Nunavummiut across the territory, the NEU remains committed to building relationships with decisionmakers who are labour-friendly and recognize the need for stronger workers and workplaces both locally and nationally.

This means working with the Government of Nunavut as well as Nunavut’s MPs, who most recently have been with the NDP.

With MP Idlout crossing the floor to the Liberals, we want to emphasize that we are committed not to an individual but to a cause. We believe in workers’ rights to fair wages, opportunity, and support in the workplace. We believe no employer should have the ability to exploit its workers or undervalue their work. We believe in putting people over profits. We believe in an economy that makes it possible for everyone to access housing, healthcare, education, and personal growth.

We believe Nunavummiut deserve to live, work, and prosper in their own territory. We believe Inuit should be able to flourish in their homelands.

While the Liberals have not given us strong reason in recent years to trust they are a pro-Inuit, pro-labour, pro-worker party, we hope that MP Idlout helps change this approach. No more massive cuts to union jobs across the country would be a good place to start.

In the meantime, we will continue advocating for and being allies to workers across Nunavut. Whether through negotiating collective agreements, lobbying, raising alarm or empowering workers on how to stand up to challenges in their workplace, the NEU has Nunavut workers’ backs.
