NEU Triennial Convention News

Doug Workman will lead the NEU for another 3 years as their president. He was re-elected to the position during the 5th Triennial Convention in Rankin Inlet.

PSAC/NEU Education

The PSAC/NEU are sponsoring a four day course (February 18th to 21st 2012) that will cover such topics as Strike preparation; Interpreting Your Collective Agreement; Facing Management; and Health and Safety.

GN Bargaining Negotiations (updated as of 1/30/2012)

Mediation between the NEU and the Government will be taking place from the afternoon of February 18th to February 21st 2012.

NEU/PSAC has been attempting to negotiate an agreement with the Government of Nunavut (GN) since March 27th 2009.

The highlights of these efforts are as follows:

March 27th, 2009 - newspaper ads are posted seeking membership bargaining demands

April 17th - May 15th, 2009 - demands are submitted to and approved by Locals and the Locals elect/select their delegate(s) to the bargaining conference

December 8th - 10th 2009 - PSAC/NEU collective bargaining conference is held; bargaining proposals are debated and selected and the bargaining team and alternates are elected

March 22nd - 26th 2010 - the bargaining team and alternates meet to finalize the demands

March 24th 2010 - NEU President, Doug Workman files the notice to bargain with GN

April 15th 2010 - NEU President receives the employer's official acknowledgement of the package of demands

September 20th - 24th, 2010 - first round of negotiations (see membership information page for more detail)

October 24th - 29th, 2010 - second round of negotiations (see membership information page for more detail)

December 12th - 17th, 2010 - third round of negotiations (see membership information page for more detail). Next round of negotiations was set for the week of April 5th 2011

April 5th - 8th, 2011 - fourth round of negotiations (see membership information page for more detail).

April 8th 2011 - NEU walks away from negotiations once the Employer tabled their wage package (0%; 1%; 1% and 1%)

April 20th, 2011 - NEU applies for mediation

May 6th, 2011 - the Minster responsible for the Public Service Act (Minister Tootoo) requests that we return to the table to negotiate further

August 8th - 10th, 2011 - fifth round of negotiations (see membership information page for more detail). NEU walks away from negotiations again and replies for mediations as the Employer's package has not changed.

August 31st, 2011 - NEU and GN agree to the mediator

October 2011 - mediation dates are agreed to for February 19th to 21st 2012(this has since changed to February 18th to 21st)

September 19th - December 4th, 2011 - strike votes are held in all communities. The membership voted 85% in favour of strike action should negotiations fail.


Should mediation not be successful, then Government of Nunavut (GN) employees covered by NEU will be in a legal strike position as of March 14th 2012(provided that an essential service agreement has been agreed to by then).

Tentative dates have been set for strike preparation courses. These are one day sessions that are open to local officers and all interested members. Please refer to the education page for further information.
