What is the Nunavut Employees Union? The Nunavut Employees Union represents the interests of the employees of the Government of Nunavut, the Northwest Territories Power Corporation who live in Nunavut, Workers Compensation Board in Nunavut, Nunavut Housing Corporation, and the unionized employees of Nunavut municipalities and Housing Associations. Most of our members work for the Government of Nunavut and live all across the territory. Others belong to Canada Labour Code bargaining units representing Housing Associations and Authorities, Hamlet and town employees, and support staff in schools. NEU members are social workers and nurses, health care professionals, power plant workers, security guards, hamlet bylaw officers, renewable resource officers, engineers, and many more. The Nunavut Employees Union is an organization of workers. Most of our members live and work in Nunavut. The NEU negotiates Collective Agreements and represents our members through grievances, joint consultations, staffing appeals, and classification appeals. Organization and Structure of the NEU The Triennial Convention, held every three years, is the supreme governing body of the NEU. It sets policy and direction which the Executive then implements. Delegates to the convention are chosen on a Regional basis by a membership vote. Three members of the NEU's Executive are elected at the Convention: the President and the 1st and 2nd Vice-Presidents. Three Regional Vice-Presidents are elected by the members in each region. The NEU also sends delegates to the PSAC triennial convention to give input to the national labour movement. The last Triennial Convention was held in 2003. What is the PSAC? The 170,000-member Public Service Alliance of Canada is made up of the NEU and seventeen other component Unions. These represent mostly workers in the federal and territorial governments. As part of the PSAC, we benefit from shared resources and expertise. Servicing Our Members The function of any union is to represent its members. This involves negotiating the Collective Agreements; handling grievances and staffing competition appeals; investigating and resolving complaints in the workplace; improving safety conditions; presenting briefs to all levels of government to preserve, enhance and defend members' rights; supplying information on issues that affect members. Our services enable our members to become more informed and active in union affairs. The backbone of our servicing is our Iqaluit Head Office, with a full time President and Administrative Officer. There are also regional offices in Rankin Inlet and Cambridge Bay, with full time Service Officers. You and your Union You may not think about it but not a day goes by that you don't depend on your Collective Agreement. If you go to work today, if you collect a pay cheque, go on vacation, take maternity or paternity leave, get paid when you're sick, have a medical and dental plan, get paid for overtime and shift work, it's all thanks to the collective agreement that has been negotiated for you. |
